Ms. Lightfoot

Hello! My name is Sherry Lightfoot. I am very happy to be your child's teacher this year. I have taught a wide variety of grades and subjects in both public and private school settings across Canada throughout my teaching career. I am very familiar with the Cochrane area having lived here for several years. It is wonderful to return to teach in this fast-growing and beautiful community.

This year, I will be your child’s homeroom teacher and will be teaching English Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Studies, Art and French as a Second Language.

This is an important time in your child’s education as he/she embarks upon new adventures in learning and undergoes significant transitions.  In Grade 5, your child will be encouraged to work more independently to develop a greater sense of responsibility that will prepare him/her for the future.

I hope to make your child’s learning experience this year a fun and exciting one that instills a lifelong love of learning.

Here are some ways you can help your child succeed this year:

  • Celebrate your child’s success, no matter how small it may seem.  This will keep him/her enthusiastic about learning and proud of their work. I believe in recognizing even the smallest “try”.

  • Ensure that your son/daughter gets enough rest, exercise and a balanced diet as all of these factors can contribute to greater success at school. Please encourage your child to bring a spill proof water bottle to school filled with fresh water daily.

  • Speak to your child about what he/she learned and studied in class on a daily basis. Furthering discussions at home on topics covered in class helps to concretize learning and provides an opportunity for further personal reflection.

  • Communicate with your child regarding homework. I encourage all students to read at home daily as this will help to enhance both reading and writing skills. I will not be assigning extra homework on a daily basis, but will ask students to complete any unfinished school work at home from time to time. I will ensure that students have ample time to complete their work and projects in class, so good use of classroom time should allow students to finish within the allotted timeframe.

I am looking forward to an enjoyable and full year of learning with your child. Please feel free to contact me with your questions or concerns by writing a note in your child's agenda or via email at

Parent Tips

A family atmosphere prevails at our school with the education of your child being a shared responsibility.  We encourage your interest in what your child does each day and welcome your involvement in the classroom, school council and at home.

    1. Please remind your child to practice his/her home reading on a regular basis. 30 minutes a day, 6 days a week is a great place to start!

    2. Please have your child access our digital levelled reading program Raz Kids and share his/her reading with you.

    3. Check out the Learn Alberta website for learning activities to do at home.
